Weather Permitting Lorraine will visit the Teaching Apiary to demonstrate on a Live Hive

2026-27 Basic Beekeeper Course - An Invitation to Reserve Your Place (05 July 2026)

What Will I Learn?

The management and manipulation of a colony of honey bees over the period of one year. How to use the equipment required to undertake the work needed to look after the bees including the smoker, the hive tool and feeding equipment. Also, the maintenance and cleaning of equipment and hive parts. Assembling the frames, fitting the foundation in the frames and spacing the frames in the brood chamber and supers of the hive. Harvesting and processing honey. The life cycle of the honeybee and swarm prevention and management.

Pests and diseases of the honeybee together with their prevention and treatment. How to avoid and treat stings. Health and safety in the apiary.

The topics will be covered in one to one discussions with your mentor, monthly meetings, forum meetings, demonstrations, practical sessions, drop in sessions and other training events.

In addition the course will prepare you for the Scottish Beekeepers Association Basic Beekeeping examination - the first step in the SBA examinations system. The oral and practical over the hive examination normally takes place in June at the association Newbattle Teaching Apiary using the hive you have looked after during the course of the past year.

Places are limited and will be allocated to members only on a First Come - First Served Basis
