At a meeting of the management committee on Sunday 7 April a decision was made to support the work of Bees for Development. The trust which was established in 1993 is now a leading international organisation specialising in sustainable beekeeping for poverty alleviation and biodiversity maintenance. In addition to the international work in countries such as Ethiopia, Uganda and Cameroon the trust provide courses on sustainable beekeeping. Their offices and retail shop are in Monmouth, South Wales. The shop revenue supports the work they do. Patrons of the trust include Monty Don, Martha Kearney, Professor Tom Seeley, Bill Turnbull and Gordon Sumner CBE better known as Sting.
Newbattle Beekeepers Association will donate an initial £50.00 to provide a Resource Box of training materials including posters, booklets and training modules which are sent to trainers, group leaders and extension workers in the countries where they operate. From a survey of beneficiaries it was found that each Resource Box benefitted on average 35 individual trainee beekeepers.
