NABA are pleased to extend an invitation to our members to join them online on Wednesday 15th January at 7.30 pm to hear Karl Coyler speak on the subject of

"Things I wish I'd known earlier".

The NABA  Zoom meeting link follows Karl's biography.

Karl is the Deputy Chair of the Bee Improvement & Bee Breeders Association (BIBA) where he oversees publications. Karl has been keeping bees since 2003 and has a growing number of hives in Cheshire where he mentors new beekeepers. He enjoys constructing hives from recycled wood and is a very practical bee breeder; bringing his engineering, quality and production experience to the fore. He has also instigated the not-for-profit social enterprise (www.beesinourcommunity.org.uk) which places hand-made hives containing home-bred bees onto company properties, farmland and individual’s back gardens, with the aim of generating curiosity and community awareness of bees.

    • Monitor the debris on the Varroa Board insert. Use a magnifying glass if need be. Count the mites every five days Check out NBU guidance on managing varroa here
    • Heft your hives. Get to know the expected weigh. It should be heavy in January. Make sure there is fondant on top of the colony. The bees will take it if they are hungry.
    • Make sure your hives are secure.
    • Make sure you have mouse guards in place
