"Living with Asian (Yellow - legged) hornets in the real world"
Amanda & Kevin Baughen
Amanda & Kevin will discuss the methods they use to cope with (Yellow - legged) Asian Hornets
Amanda and Kevin have been keeping bees in the Charente region of South West France since 2015, having moved from the UK to start a new life, focusing more on living in harmony with nature instead of being stuck in traffic and stressing about work all the time. They now share their passion for balancing structured beekeeping with a more natural way of working with their colonies, and visitors to their villa on the banks of the river Vienne range from complete beginners to experienced beekeepers looking to expand or evolve their knowledge.
As Amanda puts it: "The majority of what we learned during our training with Bee Inspectors and looking after hives in the UK is still relevant, but there has been so much change that our bees often don't know what they should be doing and when... unusual weather patterns are now the norm, winter isn't winter, planting seasons have shifted and invasive predators like Asian hornets are now a reality that our bees have to cope with. We have had to evolve our learning alongside these changes to ensure that we can be the best guardians possible for our colonies."

Since starting their social enterprise, 13 Bees, they have welcomed more than 450 visitors to their various beekeeping experiences which range from beekeeping taster sessions to 5-day intensive workshops, including sessions focusing on beeswax creations, over-wintering colonies and coping with Asian hornets.
