NEWBATTLE BEEKEEPERS ASSOCIATION

The Beekeeping Year - July

At every inspection we need to check for F.E.D.S.S. (Food, Eggs, Disease, Swarming & Space)

All monthly actions are approximate and depend on the weather and forage conditions

There are many different approaches to beekeeping but most beekeeping timetables are broadly similar to ours

  • Check Split Hives for Laying Queen -

A young queen, just starting to lay, sometimes lays more than one egg in a cell, but the eggs are in the cell bottom. She should lay normally within a short time. A young queen might not lay in a large colony until the old queen's brood has hatched.

  • Keep Hefting Hive, Again if Weather is Very Wet and Cold Feed Bees -
The bees can still run out of stores this month, particularly if there is a cold wet spell. Hefting the hive at regular intervals will give the idea of the weight of the stores left. Stores can be open or sealed honey and an arc of pollen around the brood.Be prepared to feed if circumstances require. Remember that bees cannot rear brood from honey or sugar syrup alone, they also require pollen. If feeding reduce entrance to avoid robbing. Feed in the evening. Do not spill syrup as it may induce robbing.
  • Put More Supers on if Needed -

Keep an eye on how well your supers are filling-up. Give one super at a time (or bees may sulk). A second super may be of foundation. If so it should be placed under the first so that foundation can be drawn next to the warmth of the brood chamber.
