    Presentation & Honey Tasting Session

    Led By

    Tonya McMullan

    Saturday 26 September 2020, 14:00

    The Bee Academy

The University of Edinburgh’s Talbot Rice Gallery are planning a new exhibition for 2021 that aims to reflect the challenges and opportunities of the 2020 pandemic, exploring the social, ecological and economic changes brought about by this unprecedented global event. As part of this project they have commissioned Edinburgh-based artist Tonya McMullan to develop an artwork around honey produced in 2020. Developing a creative honey archive, Tonya hopes to paint a unique picture of Edinburgh's biodiversity during this remarkable period. As a visual artist with a socially engaged practice,  Tonya would like to give a presentation about the project to Newbattle Beekeepers.

Tonya is herself a beekeeper and has set up Infinity Farm an urban beekeeping project in Belfast N. Ireland. The organisation is a social enterprise and currently manages the apiary at the NI assembly in Stormont. Over the years Tonya has led honey tastings with groups encouraging people to appreciate the varieties and consider where the bees have foraged and other factors that make the honey taste unique at this moment in time.

The presentation will last approximately 30 minutes followed by a special tasting exercise. Tonya will share some of the techniques she uses in tastings and will make this part of the afternoon interactive, opening up to members to describe their honeys. You are invited to bring the following if you wish to take part in the tasting:

    • Two or more different honeys
    • Several spoons for each honey
    • A lidded jar of coffee beans (or ground coffee)
    • Bottle of water
    • Pencil and paper
    • Blindfold

If you don’t have everything on the list you can still take part, if you would prefer to sit back and watch and listen that is ok too. Please note that it is important that people do not share spoons/honey please only taste your own honey with your own spoon.

If you would like to contribute to the honey archive please bring along a jar of your honey - if possible unlabelled - any size jar is acceptable.
